During PVC (polyvinyl chloride) processing, PVC processing aids play a key role in promoting melting (plasticization). PVC is a thermoplastic material that requires heat and shear force to melt and homogenize, but due to its strong molecular structure, complete melting may be difficult.
PVC particles require sufficient mechanical shear and heat to break down and melt into a uniform melt. PVC processing aids (such as acrylic polymers) can increase melt elasticity and make shear force transmission in the mixer or extruder more effective. This helps faster and more uniform melting and reduces unmelted particles ("fish eyes" or gels).
PVC resin particles must adhere to each other to form a homogenous melt. PVC processing aids act as temporary adhesives to help PVC particles combine and melt under heat and pressure.
Insufficient melting can lead to melt fracture (such as "shark skin") and surface defects. PVC processing aids lubricate and stabilize the melt to ensure a smooth surface of extruded or injection molded products.
Certain PVC processing aids have an internal lubricating effect, which can reduce the adhesion of the melt to the metal and promote melting. This can prevent PVC degradation (overheating) while ensuring sufficient plasticization.
PVC processing aids are essential for the full melting of PVC, ensuring: faster plasticization, uniform melt, better mechanical properties, smoother processing, and higher quality products.
