What are the advantages of ACM Impact Modifier compared to traditional CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene)?
2025-12-31

In general, ACM offers more balanced and superior overall performance and better long-term weather resistance, while CPE's core advantage lies in its lower cost.

1. Weather Resistance and Anti-aging Properties (Core Advantage)

This is ACM's most significant and widely recognized advantage.

ACM (Significant Advantage): Its main chain consists of stable C-C bonds and ester bonds, containing no double bonds or chlorine atoms. When used outdoors (exposed to UV rays, heat, and water), it is less prone to molecular chain breakage and color change. It can maintain the impact strength, color, and surface gloss of products for a long time, and has extremely strong resistance to yellowing.

Traditional CPE (Disadvantage): Its molecular chain contains chlorine atoms, which are easily dechlorinated under heat, light, and oxygen, leading to degradation and discoloration. After prolonged outdoor use, products are prone to yellowing, becoming brittle, and experiencing a rapid decrease in impact strength.

2. Processing Performance

ACM (Superior):

Shorter plasticizing time: Promotes PVC resin gelation, improving production efficiency.

Higher melt strength: Provides better melt strength and elongation at processing temperatures, reducing melt fracture, suitable for extruding complex profiles, resulting in a smoother, more refined finished product surface.

Better compatibility with PVC: Easier to disperse uniformly in the PVC matrix.

Traditional CPE (General): Delays PVC plasticization, potentially requiring adjustments to the lubrication system. Melt strength is relatively low, and may perform worse than ACM in high-shear or complex mold applications.

3. Balanced Mechanical Properties

ACM (More Balanced): Effectively improves low-temperature impact strength while having less impact on tensile strength, flexural modulus (rigidity), etc., better maintaining the inherent strength of PVC.

Traditional CPE (Requires Trade-offs): Increased impact strength comes at the cost of some tensile strength and rigidity; high addition levels can make the material "softer."

4. Weld Strength (Crucial for Door and Window Profiles)

ACM (Significant Advantages): PVC profiles modified with ACM exhibit significantly higher weld strength than those modified with CPE. This is because the ACM system better preserves the strength of the base material.

Traditional CPE (Disadvantages): Typically results in reduced weld strength, a key limitation restricting its application in high-performance doors and windows.

5. Heat Resistance and Long-Term Thermal Stability

ACM (Superior): Due to its stable structure, it produces fewer volatile substances due to thermal decomposition during processing and long-term use.

Traditional CPE (Poorer): May release small amounts of HCl at processing temperatures, potentially corroding equipment and molds, and affecting long-term thermal stability, requiring more heat stabilizers for neutralization.
