Transparent ACR impact modifier is the preferred additive and key technology for producing high-performance, highly weather-resistant transparent PVC products. It perfectly balances transparency, toughness, and weather resistance, making it an almost irreplaceable choice for outdoor applications where CPE and MBS fall short.
When producing transparent PVC products (such as bottles, packaging sheets, and transparent boards), the core requirements for the modifier are twofold:
1. Significantly improve impact toughness to prevent brittle cracking.
2. Maintain the product's inherent high transparency as much as possible.
Other common impact modifiers, such as CPE (chlorinated polyethylene) and MBS (methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymer), each have disadvantages in this regard:
CPE: Its refractive index differs significantly from PVC, resulting in severe whitening and high haze in the product, making it rarely used in transparent products.
MBS: Its core contains a butadiene rubber phase, and butadiene contains unsaturated double bonds, making it less resistant to UV rays and aging. After outdoor use or prolonged storage, MBS is prone to yellowing and aging, resulting in a loss of transparency and toughness. Therefore, MBS is typically used only in transparent indoor products.
ACR's advantages offset these shortcomings. The PMMA in the ACR shell closely matches the refractive index of PVC (approximately 1.49), resulting in virtually no light scattering at the interface between the two, thus achieving extremely high product transparency. ACR's molecular chain is composed entirely of saturated C-C and C-H bonds, with no unsaturated double bonds. This gives it excellent resistance to UV rays and thermal oxidative aging, making it ideal for transparent outdoor applications such as polycarbonate sheets, carports, and billboards.
ACR promotes the plasticization of PVC, reduces melt viscosity, facilitates melt homogenization, reduces defects like "fisheyes," and improves the surface finish of the product.
Its core-shell structure effectively initiates, terminates, and disperses silver streaks, absorbs impact energy, and significantly improves PVC's low-temperature impact resistance.
